[iOS] Top Ten Cydia Apps

This Top Ten List is the MetaParadigma’s Editor’s choice of Apps available solely thru Cydia. Cydia is the alternative software distribution platform available to users, who have jailbroken their iDevices.

So you may ask: why jailbreaking anyway? Ain’t there enough software on the App Store?

Well, let’s answer this with another question: do you wanna have a fancy Gameboy like smartfone, for which Apple decides what allowed to be installed do you wanna have a handy pocket computer which you can configure completely?

[WTF] Did Stuxnet Sabotage Iran’s Nuclear Facilities?

Newspapers are full of speculations and details about this unique piece of software code, that obviously is a work by a government.Stuxnet used 4-zero-day exploits to infect computer networks running with Microsoft Windows. It was compatible to Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The Register writes:

(..) the Stuxnet worm was programmed to probe the hosts it infected for extremely specific settings. Unless it identified the hardware fingerprint it was looking for in industrial software systems made by Siemens, it remained largely dormant.

Experts say the quality of code is very sophisticated, there are nearly no side effects. It is estimated that the costs of the development of a virus of that quality goes into the millions of dollars. It also shows a very detailed knowledge of the attacked facilities.

There are some indications that Iran’s nuclear facilities in Natanz were the target of that virus.

The downside is we suspect this is the beginning of large scale cyber attacks. I don’t think that western Nulear Facilities are safe from such attacks. Let’s all hope the best. This virus is simply a nightmare.

[PS3] Firmware 3.42 Breaks Jailbreaks

Sony tries to rearm their game console flagship. Most of you using your Playstations will likely have found out: since the end of last week Sony broadcasts a new firmware 3.42. They say it fixes security issues, which not quite wrong. But do we wanna have this issue fixed?

At the moment for online players there doesn’t seem to exist any other possibility but updating, so be aware you’re gonna lose root access to your fav console and it will possibly not come back anytime soon.

For all the others playing once in a while and mostly offline: just don’t update. We really suppose something is being worked on in the background to allow updating and not losing root access, but let’s see. Sony’s fighting with two armies: the army of technicians, and the army of darkness: they got aweful lawyers also out there ;-)

[PS3] Sony Australia Vs. PS Jailbreak Suppliers

Sony Australia somehow managed to get court orders for a temporary injunction against australian based modchip sellers like OZModChips, ModSupplier and Quantronics. Until today (Aug 31st, 2010) none of the modchip sellers is allowed to sell any PS Jailbreak device they rather have to give up the whole stock that they get until today.

Well this doesn’t come unexpected as modchip sellers in Europe have had the same legal battles a couple of years ago.

We don’t believe Sony will win in the end. Their strategy can only be delaying the inevitable. As a matter of fact, the PS3 has eventually been broken, the PS Jailbreak device samples have already been fully reverse engineered by a couple of chinese manufacturers and also by other teams.

A free open source solution is most likely to be released sooner or later.

[PS3] PS Jailbreak and Clones To Be Released

Media have widely reported about the latest steps in hacking the Playstation 3 console. Obviously that tiny PS Jailbreak USB Dongle turns a consumer PS3 into a debug PS3, thus allowing to run games from the internal or from an attached USB harddrive. The price is said to be around 160US$. For legal reasons here in Germany we can’t like to PS Jailbreak supplyers.

Now PS3Hax.net reports that using PS Jailbreak on Sony’s Playstation Network is very likely to result in being banned:

According to SKFUand RichDevX, the Backup manager game ID (LAUN-12345) could be logged/recorded by Sony when logged into PSN (when online). This would obviously allow Sony to see who would be using the illegal PSjb/clone and we could very well see ban waves similar to the Xbox 360. Sony does currently ban PSN/consoles that results in the 8002A227 error code.

Redmondpie.com reports that latest rumors indicate that there are also chinese clones of the PS3 Jailbreak called X3Jailbreak on their way, priced at 40$.

It seems like the PS3 hacking as a business model is out of date even before it started. We suspect it it won’t take long until a free open source solution will be available on the net aswell…

[iPad] Fuel.TV Replacing Skateboard With iPad

Soon after they bought the iPad they found out it hasn’t got any usable interfaces, so it seems unusable as a notebook replacement, but it makes up as a skateboard replacement pretty well.

See for yourself: Fuel.TV’s latest episode of Built To Shred. And hey: please don’t do that at home, this might void your warranty ;-)

[iPhone] Untethered Jailbreak For Firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2

Team Spirit has just released a jailbreak for the latest firmwares for

  • iPhone
  • iPod Touch and
  • iPad (early beta)

As it seems it will only jailbreak an already activated device and it will not perform a carrier unlock. The jailbreak tool is available for Windows and Mac OS X and it installs the Cydia repository.

iPad users be cautious, many Cydia Apps have not been checked for compliance with the iPad and might screw up your new gadget.

Get more information and the jailbreak tool here

Kudos to Comex and Team Spirit.

[Pre] WebOS Vulnerable To Several Attacks

Researchers from Intrepidus Group said in an advisory published on Friday last week that Palm’s WebOS operating system is subject to web application vulnerabilities.

These bugs can all be traced back to that fact that WebOS is essentially a web browser and the applications are written in JavaScript and HTML.

The bugs and vulnerabilites released are for WebOS 1.3.5. Palm has fixed all of them in WebOS 1.4. Anyway the Intrepidus Group said there are still undisclosed bugs in WebOS 1.4.

[iPhone] Google Android Running On iPhone

Notorious Planetbeing – member of the famous iPhone Dev Team – just released a vid showing he managed to install Google’s Android operating system on an iPhone 2G.

In the video below Android is demonstrated on an iPhone 2G; however, it should be pretty simple to port forward to the iPhone 3G. The 3GS will take more work.

Planetbeing thanks CPICH for reversing support, harmn1, posixnina, jean, marcan and saurik for patches, and last but not least, TheSeven for his work on the FTL.
