[iPhone] U.S. Antitrust Authorities Overhauling iPhone OS SDK Licence 4.0

Apple’s strategy of a “walled garden” now seems to be inspected by U.S. antitrust authorities. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department are overhauling Apple’s latest license change for the iPhone OS SDK 4.0. Although the process is at a preliminary stage, the interest of antitrust authorities show how powerful Apple has become in the field of mobile computing.

Some critics contend Apple is now engaging in the kind of tactics that got Microsoft Corp. in trouble with antitrust enforcers in the 1990s. “Apple is playing right out of Microsoft’s playbook—and it’s one they complained about a lot,” said David Balto, a former FTC official now at the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank.

Apple could try to head off trouble with antitrust enforcers by changing the terms of its developer agreement, one person familiar with the situation said.

[Pre] Palm Developer Early Access Program

Selected developers who recently downloaded the Palm Mojo SDK now received mail that Palm has some open positions for their Early Access Program.

Developers need to apply with their app. If being accepted they will be provided an assigned Palm account manager for technical and review questions.

As early birds devs will get the developer registration almost for free – only a $5 fee will be required for PayPal verification.

Palm seems to be in the final preparations with their Developer Program and App Catalog. They explicitly write they want developers to help with “final scalability testing”.

Palm will officially open the doors for the Developer Program in december. So if you’re a developer the Early Access Program seems to be the last chance to get into the developer program early and rebated.

[iPhone] Firmware 2.1 Beta and new SDK for Developers

Apple has just released the new firmware 2.1 beta to developers. Firmware 2.1 brings a better GPS integration for 3G devices to allow using it as a real navigation receiver. The GPS feature “Core Location” can now also detect the speed and the direction of your moves. For 2G and 3G users there will be an update included for better integration of push notifications.

Along with this beta Apple shipped the new SDK. But currently this new SDK cannot be used to provide Apps to the AppStore.

We are not aware yet, if this update solves the slowing-down issues of Apps (we reported here).
