[iPhone] Jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5

The QuickPwn.com team has released a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 build 7a312G. It is based on the work by santtiaga from iPhoneApps.ru. Also Cydia is now working on iPhone OS 3.0.

If you are no developer we strongly recommend not to update to any beta of iPhone OS 3.0, because:

  1. downloading and distribution of the beta freely on the net is illegal
  2. although this jailbreak seems to work it has not been distributed by the iPhone Dev Team (as they recommend exactly the same like we do)
  3. most of the Apps available on the AppStore will still not work with iPhone OS 3.0
  4. this beta still has bugs all over
  5. for iPhone 3G users this update may render an unlock impossible

Be warned.

[iPhone] Recommended Apps: Karajan Eartrainer

Abstract

As Holger Meyer puts it: “Karajan is an easy to use music and ear training application for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It provides lessons for learning to recognize intervals, chords, scales, pitch and tempo (bpm) with detailed statistics. Karajan is a great tool for music theory students, whether they are in junior high, high school, or college. It is also very useful for every hobby musician.”

What we say

Karajan is our APP OF THE WEEK. Karajan is pure fun. Improving our music skills is fairly easy with this program. Karajan includes:

  • Intervals
  • Chords
  • Scales
  • Pitch
  • Tempo (BPM)
  • 5 built in instruments
  • Pre defined and individual levels
  • Detailed statistics function
  • Reverse play
  • 4 different play modes

Karajan is available in two versions. The beginner version does not include all functions, but is free of charge. Get it from the AppStore (links are provided below). For first testing purposes this is the app of your choice.

Karajan is really easy to handle. See this video here:

[iPhone] iTunes 8 crashs Windows Vista

Windows Vista users complain about complete operating system crashs resulting in blue screens. iTunes 8 for Windows seems to have the following issues, when using under Vista:

  • after connection an iPod Touch or an iPhone to the USB port: complete system hang up
  • CD/DVD drives disappear from Windows Explorer

But Apple already reacted and distributes now a fixed version. This implies you need to uninstall your current iTunes 8, then download the fixed iTunes 8 and install ii.

[iPhone] Firmware 2.1 Released

Apple made their promises come true. Firmware 2.1 is out now. If you are using a pwned iPhone – don’t update now, as it is unclear at the moment, if the iPhone remains unlocked. According to Apple firmware 2.1 should:

  • Decrease dropped calls
  • improve battery life
  • reduce backup time
  • improve email reliability (POP and Exchange)
  • allow faster installation of 3rd party apps
  • reduce hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications (we don’t know either what exactly does “lots” mean?)
  • improve performance in text messaging
  • allow faster loading and searching of contacts
  • improve accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
  • and some more…

Rumors say updating the iPhone to 2.1 and using QuickPwn with firmware 2.0.2 in order to jailbreak should work. We can’t confirm this and moreover: we definitely recommend not to try this. iPod Touch may want to visit QuickPwn to find further instructions for dealing with 2.1.

As conservative users: wait a couple of days. The iPhone Dev Team is most likely on their marks…

[iPhone] Apple to release Firmware 2.1 Tomorrow

Firmware 2.1 is already available for iPod Touch customers. If you are already using firmware 2.0 this update will be free of charge. If you are running a firmware revision below 2.0 an upgrade fee will apply. iPhone users need to wait a little longer. Apple will begin seeding firmware 2.1 on friday, 12th of september. As always: for iPhone customers this upgrade is free of charge. Why buying an iPod Touch anyway?

Apple announced this upgrade will:

  • fix connection terminations
  • fix system hang ups
  • prolong battery time
  • accelerate iTunes backup synchronisation
  • improve 3G connections

iPhone Dev Team: get on your marks. 6million iPhone users are expecting your help tomorrow :-)

[e-Biz] Issues with MobileMe again and again and again and…

MobileMe is this month’ Apple’s never ending story of issues. At first it was only minor problem: customers from Germany and France could not cancel their plans. But then too many eMails got lost and Apple needed about 10 days to fix this issue. Then silently the highly advertised Push-Feature got deactivated (see our report here). In contrast to Apple’s high quality when it comes to usability and features, MobileMe began to leave an impression like a not well tested software in beta stadium.

In the end Apple did the right thing and apologized by offering one month free of charge. All customers thought all of MobileMe’s issues are solved. But sadly they were wrong.

Now MobileMe got again issues. This time syncing of addresses and appointments with mobile devices did not and in some cases still does not work properly. But as Apple said, this problem is also solved now. In certain cases data may not be synced back to the mobile devices. In those cases customers need to activate syncing manually. Read here how to do it. Take a deep breath and be patient, re-syncing may take up to 15 minutes.
