[iPhone] Jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5

The QuickPwn.com team has released a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 build 7a312G. It is based on the work by santtiaga from iPhoneApps.ru. Also Cydia is now working on iPhone OS 3.0.

If you are no developer we strongly recommend not to update to any beta of iPhone OS 3.0, because:

  1. downloading and distribution of the beta freely on the net is illegal
  2. although this jailbreak seems to work it has not been distributed by the iPhone Dev Team (as they recommend exactly the same like we do)
  3. most of the Apps available on the AppStore will still not work with iPhone OS 3.0
  4. this beta still has bugs all over
  5. for iPhone 3G users this update may render an unlock impossible

Be warned.

[iPhone] iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 seeded to Devs

Together with iTunes 8.2 beta a new iPhone OS 3.0 beta 4 has been made available to developers. There are no information about changes, but the Spotlight.app is reported to be faster and issues with a crashing Phone.app seem to have been solved.

As always: if you are no developer don’t install this beta, as you would need to download it from illegal places anyway. It is unstable and even if you were be able to jailbreak, you will not be able to unlock as this update also includes a baseband upgrade, that is currently not unlockable.

Don’t say we did not warn you!

[iPhone] Jailbreak for iPhone OS 3 beta (Update)

We’ve been informed that a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3 beta is on doubtful trade for about 10$ (and on doubtful websites full of ads). We strongly recommend

  • to wait with updating to 3.0 until the iPhone Dev Team has released a working solution, that also helps people maintaining the unlock possibility for the iPhone 3G (means to not update the baseband!) and
  • to  not use jailbreaks for 3.0. As there are no technical information available, how it works and thus what might be screwed up by applying it.

Be patient.

Update April 2, 2009: Now the iPhone Dev Team also comments on those non Dev Team jailbreaks. Obviously some people use a self modified version of QuickPwn. The iPhone Dev Team will of course give no support to people using modified QuickPwn versions. The Dev Team explicitly warns from updating to a iPhone OS beta version floating on peer2peer networks and from applying non Dev Team jailbreaks to it.The problem is the iPhone OS 3.0 is beta and thus contains lots of bugs. That is why Apple releases these betas in such a short period.

iPhone 3G users will also lose the possibility to unlock, since baseband 02.30 cannot be unlocked at this moment. Yellowsn0w is compatible to baseband 02.28 only. Last but not least: all iPhone OS 3 betas will cease to work at a certain point of time.

Just be patient.

[iPhone] Apple disallows SDK to be used for jailbreak Apps

According to ArsTechnica.com Apple’s latest update of the iPhone SDK agreement contains terms that explicitly forbids developers to use the iPhone SDK to be used to create applications that require jailbreak.

We don’t expect that this will either stop people from developing apps for jailbroken iPhones, as we feel this is a problem Apple addresses in the wrong manner, nor do we think this will stop the hackers like the iPhone Dev Team to create jailbreaks. As long as certain applications (like browsers) are not allowed in the AppStore and as long as Apple denies access to the underlying BSD Unix, people will go on enabling these features on a different way.

The recent developments like the CydiaStore show that there is a market for Apps that run on jailbroken iPhones.

[iPhone] Apple to present iPhone OS 3.0 feature’s tomorrow

The News

According to several U.S. journalists, Apple will present the iPhone firmware 3.0 tomorrow. As of now there are some rumors, that it eventually will contain:

  • MMS
  • Bluetooth and USB Tethering
  • Copy and Paste

Comment

As a normal cell fon user you may ask if this is really worth the  news, since both MMS and tethering is standard in almost any 10US$ cell. Well you are right. But this is the Apple world. Apple knows by including these features their clan of fanboys will immediately be satisfied. The internet will be immediately full of flames if anyone utters criticism. Anyway we don’t believe it will have all those three features. It will have one. Firmware 4.0 will than have another of these and so on.

And there is still the question of Sun Java or Adobe Flash. What about these? Will we have them in firmware 8.0 or never? We really like the iPhone’s UI. It definitely brought the mobile internet thing major steps forward, but we expect the iPhone’s time is up. We currently recommend to not buy an iPhone or GPhone, but wait for the Palm Pre with WebOS.

Did you know the Palm Pre is beeing developed by the former Apple iPod creator Jon Rubinstein?

[iPhone] iBluetooth available

Eventually a Bluetooth application has become available for the iPhone. As this is not approved by Apple it can be downloaded only via Cydia on jailbroken iPhones.

iBluetooth costs 4US$ and can be downloaded from the iSpazio repository. The purpose of the shareware fee is buying a complete Bluetooth stack to make it available to all customers. Currently iBluetooth comes with a seven days trial period.

[iPhone] Jailbird for Windows to Replace WinPwn

There seems to be a new kid on the block called Jailbird. Jailbird is an independent implementation of exploits the iPhone Dev Team found in order to

  • activate,
  • jailbreak and
  • sim-unlock
  • all firmware revisions 2.x

As WinPwn has not been updated for a while this is amazing news for the Windows users among us.

See Jailbird’s Website for further information…

[iPhone] iPhone 3G unlocked by iPhone Dev Team

The release of the 3G unlock software (currently going under the name yellosn0w) is due to december 31., 2008. The unlock will currently only available for baseband version 2.11.07 or lower.

Between Chrismas and new year’s eve members of the team (planetbeing, MuscleNerd and pytey) will be giving a lecture about the security systems in both the iPhone 2G and 3G on the Chaos Computer Conference 2008.

Welcome to Berlin, guys. Enjoy the most interesting and inconsistent town in Europe, today :-)

[iPhone] iPhone 3G Hardware unlocked in Vietnam

CNet.com reports Tuan Anh Do, a 29 years old business man from Hanoi, now offers hardware unlocking services for the iPhone 3G. He is owner of a couple of cell phone repair stores and he now managed to find a rather painless way to unlock the iPhone 3G and offer that as a service to customers. Unlocking costs about 80US$.

Tuan Anh Do is well known to the iPhone scene as TAmobile (Link here). He was also the first to extract the bootloader from the first generation iPhones.

Unfortunately unlocking requires desoldering, binary modifying and resoldering of the baseband chip and is therefore by far not fool proof. Painless unlocking here means “painless” for experiences solder technicians. For the rest of us we either plan a Vietnam holiday or wait for a store to offer that service around the corner. Anyway, find the whole story and some more really amazing pictures on Dong Ngo’s article on CNet.com.
