[iPhone] Ellen Publicly Apologizes For Making Fun Of iPhone Usability

Engadget.com reports that U.S. American Comedian Ellen DeGeneres apologized for making fun of the iPhone. In her “The Ellen DeGeneress Show ” she aired a funny Apple spoof. Sadly it seems Apple did not find it too funny. And so she seems to have been pleased to apologize…

[iPhone] U.S. Antitrust Authorities Overhauling iPhone OS SDK Licence 4.0

Apple’s strategy of a “walled garden” now seems to be inspected by U.S. antitrust authorities. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department are overhauling Apple’s latest license change for the iPhone OS SDK 4.0. Although the process is at a preliminary stage, the interest of antitrust authorities show how powerful Apple has become in the field of mobile computing.

Some critics contend Apple is now engaging in the kind of tactics that got Microsoft Corp. in trouble with antitrust enforcers in the 1990s. “Apple is playing right out of Microsoft’s playbook—and it’s one they complained about a lot,” said David Balto, a former FTC official now at the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank.

Apple could try to head off trouble with antitrust enforcers by changing the terms of its developer agreement, one person familiar with the situation said.

[iPhone] Adobe’s CEO Fires Back at Steve Jobs

On Wall Street Journal Adobe’s CEO Shantanu Narayen yesterday nite answered to Steve Jobs latest attack. Jobs had released an open letter yesterday morning. The bottom line of Jobs’ letter is:

  • Adobe Flash is something from the past, as it is not open,
  • it is not energy efficient and
  • it does not unleash the full powers the individual platforms (meaning: the full power of Apple’s iPhone or iPad).

Narayan responded in the WSJ.com interview, that

  • It’s got nothing to do with technology, but with control.
  • Apple wants to maintain control on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch platforms.
  • he wonders if Flash is one of the most reasons for crashing a Mac, it’s also got much to do with the operating system
  • if hardware acceleration is provided from the operating system, playing Flash takes a lot lesser energy than on a Mac.
  • Flash is an open specification

Well, well, that love is not over. We wonder how far we’re away from the point when Adobe decides to stop developing for the Apple platform? Would Apple even care? Or would they just tell thousands of designers to switch to GIMP?

We hope you don’t mind, we embed the whole WSJ.com interview as Adobe Flash ;-)

[iPad] Israel Allows Import Of iPads (Update)

On saturday, 24ht Israel’s Minister of Communications released a press statement. Israel now approved the import of Apple’s iPads to Israel.

The scrutiny conducted by the Ministry technical team vis-à-vis Apple’s
team, International laboratory and European counterparts confirmed that
the device which could be operated in various standards will be operated
in Israel in accordance to the local standards.

Update: According to german Heise.de iPads need to be used with Hebrew language as regional settings, otherwise iPads might be doing probe requests on 5 GHz channels, which are illegal to be used in Israel.

[Apple] Certified Apps Only As Of Mac OS X 10.7?

According to Rixstep.com Apple plans to set up an App Store starting with the introduction of Mac OS X 10.7.

Developers planning on marketing software for 10.7 will submit their products to the App Store as iPhone and now iPad developers have already done. 10.7 will have kernel support for (‘insistence on’) binaries signed with Apple’s root certificate.

No software will be able to run on Mac OS X 10.7 without being approved and signed by Apple, Inc.

According to MacStories.net allegedly Steve Jobs has answered a direct request send to him by Fernando Valente of Chiaro Software. Valente asked him:

There’s a rumor saying there will be a Mac App Store and no software without authorization from Apple will run on Mac OS X. Is that true)

According to the mail Steve Jobs (or someone managing his email account) simply answered:

Nope.

Anyway: you cannot be sure what his answer specifically means. Probably we’re gonna need jailbreaks for Mac OS X in the near future anyhow…

[iPhone] Adobe Ceases iPhone To Flash Compiler

After Apple’s announcement of their iPhone OS 4 SDK  license:

Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine

This came a couple of days before Adobe shipped their latest Creative Suite 5, which contains a native Flash to iPhone compiler. Sadly this compiler can only (legally) be used for iPhones running the iPhone OS3 as the license of iPhone OS 3 still allows it. Anyway at the end of june the iPhone 4G is expected and thus the new iPhone OS 4 will be released under those heavily limiting terms.

Mike Chambers of Adobe now responded publicly to Apple’s moves:

We will still be shipping the ability to target the iPhone and iPad in Flash CS5. However, we are not currently planning any additional investments in that feature.(..)

The primary goal of Flash has always been to enable cross browser, platform and device development. The cool web game that you build can easily be targeted and deployed to multiple platforms and devices. However, this is the exact opposite of what Apple wants. They want to tie developers down to their platform, and restrict their options to make it difficult for developers to target other platforms. There is plenty of commentary online about this, so I won’t belabor the point, but I have included some links below that cover it more depth:

So, was all of the work on the iPhone packager a waste of time and resources? No, I don’t believe so. We proved that:

  1. There is no technical reason that Flash can’t run on the iPhone
  2. Developers can create well performing and compelling content for the device with Flash

[App Store] Political Cartoonist Asked To Resubmit Rejected App

Wired reports that Apple has reconsidered their rejection of Mark Fiore’s App. Mark Fiore has just won the Pulitzer Prize. Apple originally said the App is in violation of their App Store policies and rejected it in december 2009.

“I feel a little bit guilty because it feels like I am getting preferential treatment,” Fiore said.

[Flash] Adobe Flash For Mobiles in 2nd Half Of 2010

Murdoch’s Fox TV has spoken to Adobe’s CEO Shantanu Narayen. Besides talking about their intimacy to Apple, Narayen says Adobe Flash for mobile devices like Palm Pre or Android is coming in 2nd half of 2010.

Regarding Apple’s anti-flash position, Narayen said:

With respect to Apple, it really isn’t a technology decision as much as it is a business decision. And they’ve chosen to keep their system a proprietory and closed system, which it why they are not supporting Flash. And I think that this hurts customers.(..)

You’re gonna see phones that run the Android operating system from Google or the Palm operating system support the web in all its glory. (..)

And so what we think is that consumers will eventually vote for the experience that they want through their wallet.

[iPad] Israel’s Customs Confiscate Imported U.S. iPads

Haaretz reports that several iPads have been confiscated by Israel customs during the last days. It seems the U.S. american iPads don’t comply with Israel’s wireless networks. Thus the Communications Ministry has legally blocked the import of iPads to Israel.

“The iPad device sold exclusively today in the United States operates at broadcast power levels [over its WiFi modem] compatible with American standards,” explained the officials. “As the Israeli regulations in the area of WiFi are similar to European standards, which are different from American standards, which permit broadcasting at lower power, therefore the broadcast levels of the device prevent approving its use in Israel,” said the officials.

Don’t try to bring iPad to Israel in your hand-baggage. It would be confiscated anyway.
