[iPhone] iPhone 3G Unlock “yellowsn0w” on Distribution

… by the iPhone Dev Team. You guys really rock. The unlock tool requires a jailbroken iPhone 3G and either Cydia or the Installer installed to download the unlock program called “yellowsn0w” from the Dev Team’s repository.

The tool gets distributed for free. Anyway some code-thieves are obviously already selling it by saying it is their work. Find further information about yellowsn0w on the Dev Team’s blog.

And yes: happy new year guys. We’re back from vacation and Berlin is full of “white snow” :-))

[iPhone] iPhone 3G unlocked by iPhone Dev Team

The release of the 3G unlock software (currently going under the name yellosn0w) is due to december 31., 2008. The unlock will currently only available for baseband version 2.11.07 or lower.

Between Chrismas and new year’s eve members of the team (planetbeing, MuscleNerd and pytey) will be giving a lecture about the security systems in both the iPhone 2G and 3G on the Chaos Computer Conference 2008.

Welcome to Berlin, guys. Enjoy the most interesting and inconsistent town in Europe, today :-)

[iPhone] iPhone 3G Hardware unlocked in Vietnam

CNet.com reports Tuan Anh Do, a 29 years old business man from Hanoi, now offers hardware unlocking services for the iPhone 3G. He is owner of a couple of cell phone repair stores and he now managed to find a rather painless way to unlock the iPhone 3G and offer that as a service to customers. Unlocking costs about 80US$.

Tuan Anh Do is well known to the iPhone scene as TAmobile (Link here). He was also the first to extract the bootloader from the first generation iPhones.

Unfortunately unlocking requires desoldering, binary modifying and resoldering of the baseband chip and is therefore by far not fool proof. Painless unlocking here means “painless” for experiences solder technicians. For the rest of us we either plan a Vietnam holiday or wait for a store to offer that service around the corner. Anyway, find the whole story and some more really amazing pictures on Dong Ngo’s article on CNet.com.

[iPhone] 3G Runs Modified Baseband and Custom Tools

The iPhone Dev Team posted some news during the last days. First of all they show us they are able to run a modified 3G baseband, although it fails integrity checks (see picture). And obviously they coded a baseband tool that allows execution of custom commands on the baseband.

Their silent and evolving works seems to be succesfull. Both these steps are major steps into a custom unlock. Anyway we don’t have information how long it will take until the final unlock, but we expect it to be aired before Chrismas.

[iPhone] Recommended Apps: Avatron Air Sharing

We already reported about Avatron’s Air Sharing some weeks ago. This really is the App of the Week. Avatron Air Sharing allows copying files from and to the iPhone wireless, thus allowing to use the iPhone similar to a portable hard drive. The only condition is to use a WebDAV compatible up- and download program. Moreover it is an excellent PDF reader. It stores the pages of all the PDFs you’ve opened yet.

[iPhone] Adobe Confirms Flash For iPhone

On the Flash on the Beach Conference eventually Paul Betlem – senior director of engineering at Adobe – confirmed, Adobe is actively developing a Flash version for the iPhone. The Flash Magazine reports, Adobe will have a Flash Player for iPhone available in short time, but since the iPhone is closed plattform Apple will decide when it will be released.

In March Microsoft and Adobe announced to license Flash Lite and the Acrobat Reader, so that all upcoming Windows Mobile OS based devices will support it.

[iPhone] Apple Sells Unlocked 3G’s in Hong Kong (update)

As of today Apple sells their new iPhone 3G factory unlocked in Hong Kong. The Apple Site explicitly says:

“iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier.”

Prices will vary from 5,400HK$ for the 8GB model (695US$ or 476€) and 6,200HK$ for the 16GB model (798US$ or 547€). This obviously is the end of Apple’s strategy of exclusive carrier linking of their iPhones.

We want to remind you that import taxes will apply when shipping from Hong Kong to either the US or Europe. So this would not be a bargain. You’d better wait a couple of weeks, probably Apple will apply this new selling strategy to other markets as well in the near future. Next step should be to license visual voicemail to any carrier worldwide and make it a standard in cell phone communication.

[iPhone] Windows QuickPwn 2.1 Released

Eventually the iPhone Dev Team released QuickPwn 2.1 for Windows. They really don’t seem to sleep never. It supports firmware 2.1. It jailbreaks, activates and unlocks iPhone 2G devices and jailbreaks iPhone 3G. It sadly still does not unlock iPhone 3G. Using is very straightforward. Kudos to the Dev Team :-)
