[iPhone] O2 Unlocking UK Customers’ iPhones

The competition in the UK seems to be getting hard around the jesus phone. Orange just released the iPhone 3GS for their network.

O2 seems to be feeling they needed to come up with something that mostly only the iPhone Dev Team or GeoHot could provide: an unlock.

The unlock is offered under the following conditions:

  • customers paying monthly can unlock at any time for free but the minimum term of contract has to be fullfilled
  • pay and go customers can unlock after 12 months for a fee of 15GBP

Unlocking will take up to 14 days. Unlocking customers will receive an SMS confirming the unlock. iTunes will then confirm that the iPhone has been unlocked successfully.

[iPhone] GreenPois0n to Jailbreak all iPhones and iPod Touchs

What has happened so far

Some irritation is going on in the Apple hacking community. On the one hand GeoHot today announced that there will be a tool that will allow jailbreaking all iPhones and iPod Touchs, but as he wished to perform further tests he didn’t tell anything about the procedure.

The Chronic Dev Team on the other hand who seem to have been working together with GeoHot now released the technical details about this hack. Sadly as there is no GreenPois0n tool available as of now, the technical details are most likely useless for 99,9% of all iPhone and iPod users.

Reasons are unknown why the Chronic Dev Team released the information before a tool has been finished. But it seems GeoHot is not amused by taking these steps.

Update 2009, Oct 19th: GeoHot and the Chronic Dev Team tell they have independently found the bug that allows for jailbreaking the 3.1 firmware.

Enduser compatible information

According to mFX.ch (german only) the forthcoming GreenPois0n jailbreak tool will not require to bring the iPhone into DFU mode. The GreenPois0n will be released on the PirateBay*.

[iPhone] iPhone 3G unlocked using Bladox Turbo SIM

[Update] Aug/25th/2008: read here, everything you gotta know about Proxy SIM solutions.

The Bladox Team has released an application for their Turbo SIM (see here how proxy SIMs work) that is obviously able to bypass the SIM lock of 3G iPhones – means unlocking it. The application is still beta and might not work on the entire planet, but it obviously does in the U.K. The name of the app is zerog-0.95.tar.gz, but for legal reasons we will not directly link it.

See this video:

It takes ages until it is logged it, but anyway it documents the current status quite well…

[iPhone] iPhone 3G sold out in Switzerland

Switzerland a beautiful country and a wonderful place to buy 3G iPhones. The Swiss carrier Swisscom offers the iPhone 3G with a prepaid SIM card. Forum reports confirm that foreigners can buy these aswell. Only two problems remain: first the Swisscom iPhone is completely sold out on Switzerland and second it is SIM locked to Swisscom (offical unlocked carrier list here). But as reported by us yesterday, a SIM proxy adapter unlock occurred in Vietnam. We expect this adapter to very soon hit the markets worldwide.

[iPhone] Honk Kong sold iPhones not SIM locked

It has been confirmed by early buyers from Hong Kong that the iPhone 3G is not SIM locked over there. However you need to sign a 24 months agreement with the carrier Hutchison Telecommunications to get hold of the iPhone and you need to activate in store.
