The german newsservice Heise.de writes as of today that Toshiba is about to bury the HD-DVD format. Since Warner in january has committed not to produce any HD-DVD Disks anymore HD-DVD was hardly threatened to survive. The decision seems to have been made now by Toshiba – formerly the original developer of HD-DVD. Read the Heise.de article here (german only)…

Im Heise.de Newsticker steht per heute, dass nun auch Toshiba die Zeichen der Zeit erkannt hat und das von ihnen vorangetriebene Format HD-DVD in den nächsten Monaten beerdigen wird. Eine nicht ganz unerwartete Entscheidung, zumal der letzte große Holywood Protagonist “Warner” im Januar bereits seinen Ausstieg aus der Herstellung von HD-DVDs erklärte. Abstract

As most of you know Netkas is constantly working on the EFI Emulation for standard PC-Bios based motherboards. As of now you can even use the Software Update (auto-update feature) included in Tiger or Leopard. Means: no hassle with kernel panics whatsoever – assumed you have a system which is close to Apple hardware (like Intel Core 2 Duo and Intel Chipset onboard)… But with revision 10.5.2 a minor issue occurred.

In short: don’t use auto update. Although Netkas released a tutorial which discribes a workaround I would encourage you to wait for a working solution. Chances are very high you screw up your system nevertheless – like a friend of mine did. Wait a solution will be posted here within the next few days… *erm* it took a little longer and it has been written for update 10.5.3 rather than 10.5.2 but the steps and the approach is almost the same – see here…

Zibri just released a tool named “ZiPhone” in Version 2.2. It does Geohot’s methods fairly automatically. It can also downgrade the 4.6 bootloader to 3.9. and some other things. The download includes a Mac and Windows version. Go to Zibri’s blog here…

Die auf offenen Quellen basierende Verschlüsselungssoftware Truecrypt ist mit kleiner Verspätung in Version 5.0 erschienen. Endlich kann man nun auch von Mac OS X Tiger oder Leopard auf seine Truecrypt Volumes zugreifen. Ganz paranoide Menschen können nun auch Systempartitionen (nur Windows) zur Bootzeit verschlüsseln. Vor dem Bootvorgang wird dann das Passwort verlangt. Ohne dieses Passwort lässt sich das Betriebssystem nicht starten oder entschlüsseln…

As many guys of you know the “Apple Mac OS X” can be installed on normal PCs. No matter if they are AMD or INTEL based. Of course best results will be obtained by using hardware that is “close to Mac”, like INTEL MoBo’s and Core2Duo CPUs. By taking this into account it is possible to build a low priced “Mac Pro like” system.

Main problem was the support for different graphic cards. But until now even ATI chipsets are supported by the community (sadly not by Apple themselves). Even the ATI Radeon x1650 card with device id 0x71c6 will work when you follow a tutorial written here…

Schon kurz nach der Transition von Motorola/IBM Power PC CPUs auf Intel CPUs wurde bekannt, dass man mit einigem technischen Verstand OS X Tiger auch auf standard PCs zum Laufen bekommt, sofern die Hardware ähnlich der Referenzhardware von Apple ist. Ausgestattet mit einer Tiger oder Leopard Lizenz ist dies sogar vollkommen legal. Man hat eben nur zuweilen ein wenig Arbeit bei Aktualisierungen, kann sich so aber ein Mac Pro ähnliches Gerät erheblich günstiger selbst zusammenbauen…

Für die unterschiedlichsten Grafikkarten gibt es mittlerweile Unterstützung und auch für die lange als problematisch eingestufte Karten mit ATI x1650 Chipsätzen. Man schaue mal hier, es findet sich eine hervorragende Anleitung für diese ATI Karten mit der Device ID 0x71c6.

[iPhone] GeoHot modifies Phone Bootloader 4.6

George Hotz just modified iPhone’s Bootloader 4.6. With those results:

  • no signature checks
  • Secpack update check removed
  • full write access

But since the original bootloader is legally owned by Apple you will not be able to download this bootloader. But he said he would provide patches… More information to be found here…

George Hotz hat den iPhone Bootloader 4.6 modifiziert. Features:

  • keinerlei Signaturprüfungen mehr enthalten
  • Secpack Update Abfragen entfernt (vorher wenn “updateversion” <= “currentversion”, dann “update verweigern”
  • vollen Schreibzugriff

Leider leider ist der originale Bootloader ja urheberrechtlich geschützt durch Apple. Daher wird man den Bootloader in vorbereitet modifizierter Form von Geohot so nicht im Internet finden… oder doch ;-) Auf alle Fälle wird er in den nächsten Tagen einen Patch bereitstellen…

George Hotz – the first one to unlock an iPhone ever (via the highly newbie incompatible hardware testing point method) – did it again. New iPhones being shipped beginning at latest in week 45 can now also become unlocked very comfortable on the software way. More information in George’s own Blog entry. I’d really like to see statistics of sold devices and have these statistics compared to the dates when the public got to know that there are ways for simple unlocking – any correlations?

George Hotz – seines Zeichens der Erste, der den SIM Lock des iPhones entsperrt hatte (damals noch auf kompliziertem Hardware Weg) – hat sich selbst übertroffen. Neue iPhones, die spätestens ab Kalenderwoche 45 hergestellt wurden, können somit einfach und bequem entsperrt werden und mit jedem beliebigen Provider betrieben werden. Details und Downloads finden sich in Georges eigenem Blog (englischsprachig). Ich würde wirklich gerne mal die Statistik der verkauften Geräte sehen und sie mit den Terminen abgleichen, an denen bekannt wurde, dass Unlocks möglich sind. Gibt es da Korrelationen?
