[MacOS] Determine Manufacturer of a Mac Book Pro Retina Display

There is a a lot of fuss going around the latest Retina equipped Mac Book Pro’s. Looks like the MBPs can be delivered with either a Samsung display or a Sharp/LG. The problem is: the Sharp/LG displays seems to produce ghosts on the screen. Apple says there might be “image persistance” in some rare cases, but did not admit that it is related to the type of display used. Anyway the Apple discussions forum provides a huge thread.

So if you wanna make sure that you don’t have a Sharp/LG display in your MBP just type this line: Continue reading

[iPhone] Issues with iPhone DFU mode in MacOS 10.5.6

According to forum reports the iPhone DFU mode, which is required to install custom firmware with PwnageTool, does not get detected properly after updating Mac OS X to 10.5.6.

That means you cannot Jailbreak or Unlock the iPhone currently. The iPhone Dev Team has investigated in to this issue and comes to the conclusion that this is not a countermeasure by Apple, but a bug in the new kernel.

The Phone Dev Team names possible fixes for 10.5.6. As always: you do this at your own risk!

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

If you did not update yet to 10.5.6 better don’t do it and wait for a fix or for 10.5.7 to be released.

[Apple] New Mac Books Out Now

We’ve all been expecting the release of the new series for the last few months. Mainly the MacBook Pro really needed a redesign. We feel like the displays look a bit like the LCDs manufactured by HP, but anyway those machines really look nice. Pricing might still feel like to to high in comparison to normal x86 Laptops. People on forums critisize that there is still no 11″ or 12″ on-the-road compatible machine. Anyway, four things are new with these Mac Books

  1. the 13″ MacBook model comes without firewire
  2. the case is laser cut in (almost) one piece.
  3. no real buttons but the special Glass Trackpad with corners assigned as buttons
  4. integrated graphics: NVIDIA 9400M combined with a 9600M GT switchable graphics chip

Prices vary at least between 1,300US$ and 2,000US$. You may find the new models on the US Apple store.

The german Golem.de got a vid showing how the manufacturing process of the cases is being done now (you may ask yourself – like we did – why the (asian?) faces of the factory workers are not being showed a single time). And Engagdet got a nice video showing the glass trackpad in action. Find both videos below.
