[Media] Newspaper Articles About Copying And File Sharing

Abstract

According to the RIAA the media industry is suffering heavy losses due to increased copying and file sharing in the last 10 years. Sanity and reason shows there must be something true with that argument. But are the numbers the media companies are providing correct? What can we learn from history?

The following links provide an uncategorized and unsorted mixture of links (in multiple languages) dealing with the topic of copying and file sharing. It is in no way complete and perfect, but is probably usable as a lateral cut thru that topic.

We will update this section frequently. Comments are highly appreciated.

[PS3] GeoHot Reenables “Other OS” (Linux) Support

What happened so far?

GeoHot has had a reverse-engineerer’s look into Sony’s high tech gadget and Sony immediately declared war.

Obviously in panic, Sony announced to deactivate Linux (Other-OS) support with their latest firmware 3.21. This was the time when people were wondering how long it would take until GeoHot would reenable it.

The magic PUP files

So it did not take too long. That notorious hacking genious did it. He says he’s using a custom PUP file. A PUP file basically is an update file for the PS3. The interesting point is usually PUP files are signed by Sony.

Speculations

Could that mean there is a major flaw in Sony’s implementation of checking the authenticity of update files (at least until firmware 3.15, which GeoHot mentions is the latest that allows to install his custom PUP).

Anyway, the next weeks will be very interesting.

[iPhone] How Multi-Tasking is Gonna Look Like

Leaked vid showing multi-tasking on iPhone 3GS

It seems someone has got his hands on a developer beta of iPhone OS 4.0. The vid below shows how multi-tasking is gonna be implemented on the iPhone. We say: yes eventually multi-tasking, but no: Palm’s webOS approach to multi-tasking is unbeaten at the moment. Apple should consider buying Palm. They are cheap and half the staff is former leading elite Apple people anyway ;-)

Apple’s golden rule: product lifecycles are two years, amigos

Sadly although Cydia users know that multi-tasking is possible even on first gen iPhones, Apple will not enable multi-tasking on devices older than iPhone 3GS.

iPhone 2G users already made a bitter experience when MMS was not enabled on their devices with the 3.0 update.

[MacOS] Recommended Apps: SimplyRar and MacPar Deluxe

I. Abstract

Coming from the Windows world most of us people know the .rar archive format very well. Besides the newer 7zip format, Rar allows a good compression and is widely used on internet distribution.

II. What do we need?

People who only need to have a decompressor for compatibility reasons can use MacPar Deluxe. Users who also want to be able to compress files aswell need to get SimplyRar:

» For Uncompressing only use MacPar Deluxe (download here)…
» For Compressing and Uncompressing use SimplyRar (download here)…

III. How do these tools work?

III.I.MacPar Deluxe

MacPar Deluxe is intended for unpacking only. The part of the name Par indicates its main use, as it is a tool for people downloading things from the usenet. Par files are files that contain repair information for damaged main files. Anyway: MacPar Deluxe also contains a very simply unrar engine.

III.II. SimplyRar

SimplyRar is a graphical user interface for the free command line version of rar for Mac OS. It contains (almost) all features of the command line. As a switcher I currently cannot tell what features are missing in comparison to WinRar for Windows.
