[Pre] Overclocked Kernel for webOS 1.4 Released

We recently reported that the developers unixpsycho and caj2008 released an overclocked kernel for webOS 1.3.5. allowing to run webOS between 720MHz and 800MHz. Now the testing phase is over and they released their patches for webOS 1.4. Check the vid to get an overview how amazing fast webOS is at those clockcycles.

Anyway there is warning: overclocking may result in cut down lifetime and reduced battery runtime. It may also void your warranty. Unixpsycho and caj2008 had a team of 40 betatesters.

PreCentral reports:

unixpsycho and caj2008 have determined that they believe this overclocking method doesn’t result in excess heat. Caj tells us that heat problems actually can happen at any CPU frequency and that one especially hot time is when a Pre downloads massive 3D games after a wipe.

[Pre] Palm Pre Overclocked to 800MHz

A team of developers consisting mainly of caj2008 and unixpsycho from PreCentral-Forums managed to overclock the Pre, now running 800MHz stable.

Currently this requires a custom modified kernel. caj2008 and unixpsycho released a kernel for webOS 1.3.5.1, a kernel for webOS 1.4 is still under development. Anyway you may check this vid: webOS unbelievable fast.

Kudos to caj2008 and unixpsycho.

[Pre] Nokia Qt Library Ported to WebOS

Darron Black of Griffin Inc. has ported Nokia’s Qt library (speak: cute) to WebOS. Although the Palm Pre is a competitor fon from Nokia’s perspective, they seem to actually follow their Qt Everywhere strategy.

Moreover Nokia obviously likes it a lot, as they explicitely feature Qt on the Pre.

[Pre] Adobe Releases Flash 10.1 Beta To Developers

On the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Adobe released Flash 10.1 beta. This non public release aims at developers to allow them to make final changes to their Flash based websites to make them compatible to mobile devices.

Currently some Flash based applications are not adjusted to mobile devices. So touching buttons on small displays is not working best. Adobe recommends Flash content providers to adjust their products for mobile devices.

Adobe Flash 10.1 is coming to Google’s Android, Symbian OS, Palm’s WebOS, Windows Mobile, and Blackberry. A final version will be finished in mid 2010.

Adrian Ludwig of Adobe says, technically the Flash platform could easily be enrolled to the iPhone, but Apple’s license policies does not allow that at the moment. Moreover he says In december 2010 more than 7million iPhone and iPod Touch users tried to browse to Adobe’s Flash installer website to find out it is not available for that device.

[Pre] Recommended Apps: Reboot Scheduler

Many of us know the phenomenon. The longer we use the iPhone or the Palm Pre the slower it goes. Rebooting the system always helped on either device.

For the Palm Pre there is now a solution that is called Reboot Scheduler by Zinge, which allows to automize the reboot process and to schedule it to a certain time.

We feel this is a nice tool for people running homebrew apps on their Pre anyway. You find it via the PreCentral repository.

That’s what we really like about the Palm Pre WebOS platform: it embraces the homebrew developers. No jailbreaking, no hassle.

Kudos fly out to Zinge and the PreCentral team.

[Pre] Palm Pre’s Slider Oreo Issues

Forum reports seem to be growing about this issue. A certain amount of first generation Palm Pre’s being sold all over the world seem to have slider issues. “It just wobbles too much, thus making it feel like a 500€ plastic toy.”, said a customer in a local O2 store.

Our testing device received from  a local O2 store in November, 2009 here in Berlin suffers the same slider issue.

When talking to O2’s customer support,  he by the way confirmed: “my Pre had the same issue. It is being repaired currently.”

Fortunately the repairing procedure with O2 is quite painless. If a customer realizes a defect within the first seven days of purchase, the local O2 store offers direct exchange of the device (this not only applies to Palm’s devices but to any cell phone O2 offers here in Germany). If defects are reported after seven days, they will be repaired within two weeks. Business customers are offered exchange devices at any time within 48hours.

If Palm Pre’s having the orea offect can be repaired at all, is still not really proven. According to a report on PreThinking, U.S. american devices are getting exchanged. Repair centers are not allowed to repair them.

When asking O2’s customer service, if the slider issue has been reported often, he answered: “No, this is a very rare issue, and we also asked Palm about this, and they also said, there is no slider issue.”

This might be the case for Germany, but in the meantime Palm in the U.S.A. seem to have implicitly confirmed the slider issues. In a PreCentral.net review article of the second generation Palm Pre (called Palm Pre Plus for the Verizon network), Dieter Bohn mentioned that “Palm says that they’ve fixed up the slider action (..)”.

In the meantime we’ve received our exchange device, and guess what? Although it still is a first generation Palm Pre, this slider has no orea effect.

It feels a lot more stable, making it eventually a serious tool for all the people who don’t want to follow the iPhone hype.

[Pre] Enable Developer Mode

Enabling the Developer Mode gives access to a thousand of homebrew apps and apps which are currently under beta testing.

There are now two ways known to enable the Pre’s dev mode.

1. Simply enter the Konami cheat code:

upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart

2. or enter this:

webos20090606

in either way, you’ll see a “secret” menu switch that allows you to enable the developer mode. After that reboot the device.
