[Muzaq] Audacity 2.0 Released

The platform independent and Open Source driven audio editing software Audacity has been released in version 2.0. Audacity is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Many people say, Audacity is simply one of the best software audio editors with a huge amount of well designed built-in functions (fading, normalizing, vocal remover etc.).

It is compatible to LADSPA-Plugins, Nyquist-Plugins and VST-Effects.

Although the GUI should imho still be enhanced in comparison to its commercial competitors (Steinberg Wavelab, Sony Soundforge, Adobe Audition etc.), Audacity is a must-have, as it is free and from a technical point of view it is impressively powerful.

Don’t waste your time and grab your copy now.

[Muzaq] Artists Sue Major Labels – $6 Bill. Lawsuit

Again the irony of reality strikes back on the major record labels. According to articles on Toronto Star, Golem.de, TorrentFreak.com canadian record companies have illegaly copied thousands of songs from artists without permission and without sharing the profit with the artists.

Instead the record companies put every song on a “pending list”. According to Golem.de this list has been set up in the 1980s until nowadays and comprises 300,000 songs. Following the idea of “exploit now, pay later if at all” the music companies have never shared profits until now.

In october 2008 the estate of Chet Baker (a famous jazz musician in the 1950s) fired a class-action lawsuit against the music industry. Well known artists like Beyonce or Bruce Springsteen have joined the list plaintiffs.

The defendants on the other hand are Warner, Sony BMG, EMI, Universal, and the likes. The irony here is: those four major labels are also the primary members of the CRIA – the Canadian Recording Industry Association.

Michael Geist of Toronto Star writes:

At $20,000 per infringement, potential liability exceeds $6 billion.

These numbers may sound outrageous, yet they are based on the same rules that led the recording industry to claim a single file sharer is liable for millions in damages.

With those news the Music industry’s fights against piracy will not become any easier. Media industry should eventually stop not facing up to reality.

Our comment

Good night major music companies. This is one of the worst message you could have ever been transporting to the consumers: “We exploit everyone, no matter if it is an admonished file sharer, or an artist. As long as we do it, it is right.”

Your business models are dying, and so are you. Creative indy labels that understand how to use technologies like the internet for the consumers and not against them and how to share profits with the artists will survive.

[MacOS] Recommended Apps: MacTubes

Abstract

Do you ever wanted to download some of the YouTube videos, simply to have them available when being on the road? Or say: you wanna archive them, because as we’ve seen in the past with several major media services: there will be a time when they don’t exist anymore.

But YouTube does not support downloading their videos anymore.

MacTubes’ Features

This is where MacTubes by mametunes comes into place. MacTubes is an open source project that is freely downloadable. Besides downloading MacTubes also supports just playing YouTube videos. You also can make custom playlists without having a YouTube account.

Tips and Tricks

MacTubes is straightforward, as most of those nice freeware Mac applications are.

The only hint we can give: don’t wonder if errors occur when trying to download HD videos. This is normal. Although YouTube may show that you are playing the video in HD quality, this is not true in all cases. You can see this quite obviously when comparing the video resolutions between the normal video and the HD video just with your eyes.

[Muzaq] imeem Social Media Service

Say, do you wanna listen to musiq for free? Surely, everybody does. But in contrast to downloading albums illegally from Rapidshare, with “LastFM” and “imeem” it is legal to listen to music online. In general both services offer quite the same.

What is “imeem”?

The one little difference is that LastFM is now beginning to charge its users for allowing them to stream music to their clients. Only users from the U.S., U.K. and Germany seem to be excluded from this new business model. imeem in contrast to LastFM is still free. Anyway for playing songs at the full length on imeem a free registration is required. Luckily the registration process at imeem really takes some seconds and only requires your surename, forename, email-address, password and birthdate. Without registration only 30 seconds of the songs are being played (see our precompiled playlist at the bottom of this article). Some background information about imeem can be found here.

Listen to imeem playlists on the road

There is also an iPhone and an Android application available to use imeem’s services from our Jesus phones. Get imeem’s iPhone app for free on the AppStore. Information about the Android application can be found here.

If you wanna listen to songs from this playlist at full length just register and click here to get my playlist.
