[MacOS] MacUpdate Launched Holiday App Bundle for $49

Yeah, it was overdue already. The guys over at MacUpdate just launched their  pre-chrismas holiday app bundle. For US$49 you will get:

  • Data Rescue 3 (instead of US$99)
One of the best data recovery tool for the Mac
  • Espresso 2 (instead of US$75)
One of the best CSS, HTML, XML, JavsScript editing tools around
  • TotalFinder (instead of US$18)
The Must-have tool, since Apple’s finder is really still total crap
  • TotalSpaces (instead of US$15)
brings eventually back the grid-style spaces to OS X 10.7 and 10.8
  • Snapz Pro X 2.5 (instead of US$69)
Screenshots and video capturing made as easy as possible
  • Mac DVDRipper Pro 4 (instead of US$25)
Copying, Ripping and Converting DVDs made easy, in times of MacBookAirs this tool looks vintage to me ;-)
  • PopChar X 6 (instead of US$38)
Accessing special font characters made easy, usable scenarios really unknown to me
  • MoneyWell 2 (instead of US$50)
some finance manager, I would never use ;-)
  • Swift Publisher 3 (instead of US$30)
never heard of that one, but sounds interesting
  • RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 (instead of US$30)
Sim Game in Theme Park style. For those of you who have enuff time for games ;-)
  • Company of Heroes (instead of US$30)
never heard of that one, sounds like the typical military strategy game

Anyway: the bundle makes sense at least for the TotalFinder, DataRescue, TotalSpaces and Snapz Pro. Means you can’t do anything wrong by buying it. And who knows, probably PopChar, MoneyWell and Swift Publisher might turn out to be useful aswell. The first 12,000 buyers will get Live Interior 3D for free on top (saves you another US$129)…

[MacOS] Recommended Apps: MacTubes

Abstract

Do you ever wanted to download some of the YouTube videos, simply to have them available when being on the road? Or say: you wanna archive them, because as we’ve seen in the past with several major media services: there will be a time when they don’t exist anymore.

But YouTube does not support downloading their videos anymore.

MacTubes’ Features

This is where MacTubes by mametunes comes into place. MacTubes is an open source project that is freely downloadable. Besides downloading MacTubes also supports just playing YouTube videos. You also can make custom playlists without having a YouTube account.

Tips and Tricks

MacTubes is straightforward, as most of those nice freeware Mac applications are.

The only hint we can give: don’t wonder if errors occur when trying to download HD videos. This is normal. Although YouTube may show that you are playing the video in HD quality, this is not true in all cases. You can see this quite obviously when comparing the video resolutions between the normal video and the HD video just with your eyes.

[MacOS] Recommended Apps: QuickSilver

I. Abstract

You don’t like Spotlight, because it is too slow? But you want to to speed up command execution? Yes there is a nice freeware solution available called QuickSilver by BlackTree. Wikipedia writes: Quicksilver “allows users to use the keyboard to rapidly perform tasks such as launching applications, manipulating files and data, running scripts, or sending e-mail.”

II. Links

You’d better get used to using QuickSilver. We strongly recommend to not use Mac OS without it:

[MacOS] Recommended Apps: SimplyRar and MacPar Deluxe

I. Abstract

Coming from the Windows world most of us people know the .rar archive format very well. Besides the newer 7zip format, Rar allows a good compression and is widely used on internet distribution.

II. What do we need?

People who only need to have a decompressor for compatibility reasons can use MacPar Deluxe. Users who also want to be able to compress files aswell need to get SimplyRar:

» For Uncompressing only use MacPar Deluxe (download here)…
» For Compressing and Uncompressing use SimplyRar (download here)…

III. How do these tools work?

III.I.MacPar Deluxe

MacPar Deluxe is intended for unpacking only. The part of the name Par indicates its main use, as it is a tool for people downloading things from the usenet. Par files are files that contain repair information for damaged main files. Anyway: MacPar Deluxe also contains a very simply unrar engine.

III.II. SimplyRar

SimplyRar is a graphical user interface for the free command line version of rar for Mac OS. It contains (almost) all features of the command line. As a switcher I currently cannot tell what features are missing in comparison to WinRar for Windows.

[iPhone] Recommended Apps: vTuner Radio App

Our german fellow Holger Meyer strikes again. After his awarded ear training program Karajan (our report) he now founded a company and cooperates with vTuner from New York.

What is vTuner?

vTuner allows you to turn your iPod Touch or iPhone into a radio receiver. You can listen to more than 7,000 radio stations from all over the entire planet. You can choose frmo 50 genres, 120 countries and 50 languages and eventually set favourite.

Moreover you can get information about upcoming shows and shows currently playing. A really nice-to-have feature is the integrated webbrowser. It allows you to surf the net while listening to your chosen radio streams. You don’t need to leave vTuner.

What else?

Congrats from Berlin. This app is definitely a-must-have for all guys loving muzaq.

[MacOS] Recommended Apps: Witch

All of us switchers know the situation: rather that switching from one application to another in Microsoft Windows we can switch from every window to another using ALT-TAB. The problem is such behaviour is not known to the Mac world.

The developer Peter Maurer puts it that way:

Sure, you can use Mac OS X’s Exposé to switch windows, but doing so can be very clumsy if you’re the keyboard-only type of user. And don’t all of these windows look just the same when they are scaled down?

Witch lets you access all of your windows by pressing a shortcut and choosing from a clearly arranged list of window titles.

And the best: it’s shareware (!) Sorry for the error before…

[iPhone] Recommended Apps: Avatron Air Sharing

We already reported about Avatron’s Air Sharing some weeks ago. This really is the App of the Week. Avatron Air Sharing allows copying files from and to the iPhone wireless, thus allowing to use the iPhone similar to a portable hard drive. The only condition is to use a WebDAV compatible up- and download program. Moreover it is an excellent PDF reader. It stores the pages of all the PDFs you’ve opened yet.

[iPhone] Recommended Apps: PaklSound1

People in the know what’s going on in the field of music innovations have already gotten to know Tenori-On by Yamaha. Tenori-On is by far the most innovative new music instruments (read article here).

Anyway a group of programmers now decided to bring at least parts of the fun that Tenori-On includes to our beloved Jesus phone. The application is called PaklSound1 and is pure fun when sitting in the train or anywhere else. Be warned it is by far not as powerful as Tenori-On and requires lots of battery power, but therefore it costs only 0.79€ (0.99US$).
